Remera Presbytery Marks the 32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi
On April 23, Remera Presbytery held a 32nd commemoration event of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event honoured former pastors and staff members who served in different institutions of the former Remera Region and lost their lives during the genocide against the Tutsi 1994.
The commemoration started with the laying of wreaths at Mu Cyiryamo cy’Inzovu, near Rukoma Sector, where many victims were killed. Participants also laid flowers at the memorial site where the victims were buried.
The event brought together several leaders and guests, including the Vice Mayor of Kamonyi District in charge of Social Affairs, pastors from different EPR presbyteries, security officials, 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi survivors and their families, students, Christians from various EPR congregations, and citizens in general. The Guest of Honor was the Vice President of the Presbyterian Church in Rwanda (EPR).
Different activities were carried out during the event, including remembrance songs, prayers, sharing of God’s Word, a testimony, and speeches from representatives of different institutions.
In her keynote address, the Vice President of EPR reminded participants that remembrance is not about remaining trapped in the past, but rather about honoring the dignity of those who were killed because of who they were born to be. She reflected on the history of the Church, noting that EPR was among the first institutions to publicly confess and acknowledge the role played by some of its members during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. She further emphasized the responsibility of all people to become protectors of truth, peace, and unity, stressing that all people are one in Christ and that no one should ever be deprived of dignity or the right to life.

Vici President of EPR, Rev Julie KANDEMAShe concluded by reaffirming EPR’s commitment to continue working with the Government of Rwanda to promote unity, reconciliation, justice, lasting peace, and sustainable development for all citizens.
